Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee declared former Indian Cricket Team captain and ex-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India Sourav Ganguly as the “Brand Ambassador of Bengal” at the Bengal Global Business Summit 2023 in Kolkata on Tuesday.
As reported by news agency ANI, Mamata Banerjee announced Ganguly as the brand ambassador of West Bengal and also acknowledged his popularity with the younger generation.
“Sourav Ganguly is a very popular figure and he can work for the younger generation in a very good manner. I want to involve him as the Brand Ambassador of Bengal,” said Mamata Banerjee
Ganguly made his One-Day International (ODI) debut against West indies in 1992 while his Test debut came against England at Lord’s where he scored a century, thus becoming only the third cricketer to achieve such a feat on debut at Lord’s.
In 2000, Ganguly was named captain of the Indian Cricket Team. As captain, he led India to win the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and reach the final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup and the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy. He is regarded as one of India’s most successful cricket captains.
He was the third batsman to cross 10,000 runs in ODI cricket having scored 11363 runs in the format. Ganguly holds the record for highest score in an innings (183) by an Indian batsman in the ODI World Cup.
He was awarded the fourth highest Indian civilian award, Padma Shri in 2004. From 2015 to 2019, Ganguly was the President of the Cricket association of Bengal. In 2019, he became the President of the BCCI. He is also a part of the Supreme Court of India appointed probe panel for the IPL Spot fixing and betting scandal’s investigations.
